Involved in archery since the age of 9, Mike competed at the local, state and national level for 25 years. He was the 1978 Indoor National Champion and competed in three Olympic Trials.

He began coaching in 1982, mentoring both men's and women's teams at the 1991 Pan-Am American Games in Cuba, as well as teams from Spain. He was a staff coach for the U.S. Archery team and Jr. Elite U.S. Archery teams from 1986 through 1996.

?Michael was chosen to be the head coach of the 1996 U.S. Olympic team, which brought home gold medals in both men's individual and team.
