Greg Meyer is the last American male to win the Boston Marathon (1983).
He first starred in track and field at West Catholic High, then in distance running as a four-time All-American for the University of Michigan where he was the first U-M runner and first Michigan native to break four minutes for the mile.
In road racing Meyer set 10 American records, and he set a world record in the 10-mile run and the 25K. In addition to his landmark win in Boston, he also won the Chicago and Detroit marathons. His 10-mile run from 1983 remained an American record as of 2020.
In 1978 he won the U.S. Amateur Athletic Union's cross-country running title narrowly edging out Alberto Salazar. The U.S. boycotted the 1980 Summer Olympics, and Meyer finished seventh in the 1984 Trials.
The Rockford resident, a seven-time winner of the (Old Kent, Fifth Third now Amway) River Bank Run in his hometown, has served as the elite athlete recruiter/coordinator for the race for several years.
He worked as director of major gifts for the University of Michigan and was an associate vice-president for Institutional Advancement at Aquinas College before taking his current position as chief community officer at Metro Health-University of Michigan Health in Grand Rapids.
He is also in the University of Michigan Athletics Hall of Fame and is a former trustee for the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame.
