A member of Grand Rapids first family of boxing, Mayweather was twice a world champion, first as junior lightweight champion from 1983-84, then ascending to the super lightweight title from 1987-89.
Calling himself “The Black Mamba,” he fought against 18 world champions while compiling a professional record of 59-13, including 35 knockouts.
In 1983 he was the first Grand Rapids fighter to win a world title (WBA and lineal super featherweight) since fellow Hall of Fame member Stanley Ketchel in 1909. He won in a technical knockout against Samuel Serrano of Puerto Rico in a fight held in Puerto Rico. He defended that title twice before losing for the first time in his pro career in his 18th fight to Rocky Lockridge in 1984. He became a world champion again in 1987 (WBC lightweight) with a TKO against Rene Arrendondo for the super lightweight title. He defended four times and lost to Julio Cesar Chavez in 1989 via TKO. Mayweather also held the IBO light welterweight title in 1994 and the IBO welterweight crown from 1994-1995.
In boxing, he was considered the hardest puncher of the Mayweather family, which included his brother Floyd Mayweather Sr., who was 28-6 as a pro, nephew Floyd Mayweather, the 50-0 boxing superstar who won titles in five weight classes and is generally considered among the greatest fighters ever, and Jeff Mayweather, a IBO junior lightweight champion.
He was a celebrated trainer for his nephew Floyd for several years.
He died in March of 2020 in Las Vegas after suffering with several health issues including diabetes. He was 58.
