Doug Wyn, a product of the powerhouse wrestling program at Grandville High School, concluded his collegiate wrestling career at Western Michigan University with a perfect season and the 167-pound NCAA title in 1974 when he beat Jeff Callard of Oklahoma 5-2, in the finals.
He was deemed the school’s greatest wrestler after being the only three-time Mid-American Conference champion and three-time All-American in program history and setting school records for wins with 89 and pins with 29.
He was 89-15 overall. Western Michigan dropped its wrestling program in 1982.
In high school he fashioned a 93-8 overall record and was a three-time All-Conference performer and three-time District Tournament winner.
As a senior he won conference, district and regional titles while going 42-0 into the state championship match at 145 pounds. He lost in that title match to Howard Hobson of Clio, who he beat a year later while wrestling for Western and Hobson wrestled for Eastern Michigan.
