Ray Smith is a Hope College coaching legend, athletic director and professor.
He earned a football scholarship to UCLA and was its Athlete of the Year as a senior, played in the East-West Shrine game and then professionally for three years in the Canadian Football League.
He came to Hope in 1970 and in 25 seasons became the winningest coach in the history of the MIAA (149-69-9) with nine conference championships. In 1984, his team was 9-0 and he was named the NCAA Division III Co-Coach of the Year.
In his 29 years as athletic director Hope won a record 24 MIAA All-Sports Awards.
In 2013, the Holland Municipal Stadium, home of Hope football since 1979, was dedicated as the Ray and Sue Smith Stadium.
He is known as a man of deep faith and high integrity.
