First a standout athlete at Grand Rapids Christian and Calvin College, Mike "Mickey" Phelps won 568 games in 35 seasons coaching high school basketball.
He was never whistled for a technical foul. In 13 seasons at East Kentwood his teams won 10 conference, five district and three regional titles. In 21 seasons at Holland Christian his teams won 10 district titles and four regional titles. His 568-239 overall coaching record had him at No. 12 all-time in Michigan as of 2019.
In college, he led Calvin to MIAA titles in 1969 and 1970, and he was the league’s Most Valuable Player in 1970. A shortstop in baseball, he was MIAA Most Valuable Player in that sport in 1970 as well. He is the only athlete in league history to achieve those two honors.
He is also in the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan and Michigan High School Coaches Association's Halls of Fame.
