1925 Union High School Football

Induction Year: 2004

The Grand Rapids Union High School football team of 1925 finished the season undefeated and unscored upon. The team was coached by John Truesdale and either was 9-0 or 10-0 according to conflicting sources, but apparently rolled through the season in impressive fashion. According to the MHSAA archives of historian Ron Pesch only Grand Rapids South High and Muskegon High posed threats that season.
Robert “Rocky” Parsaca, a standout player and talented kicker, made a field goal to give Union a 3-0 win over Muskegon on the muddy grounds of Grand Rapids’ Island Park, and Rocky again was the star in the season-ending showdown with rival South High. Rocky, just a junior, kicked three field goals in a 9-0 win. President Gerald Ford did not play in the game for South High. His first year at South High was 1927.
Union was named what is now regarded as a “mythical state championship” along with unbeaten Port Huron and unbeaten Flint Central because the Associated Press did not start declaring state champions until years later. Port Huron also ended the season unscored upon. The MHSAA archives indicate that typical of that era there was talk of the two schools playing a season-ending game, but it was never played.
